Bethesda Case Studies

Challenge 1 (Utility Service Co.):
In my initial meeting with his client, they shared with me that they were working 80 hours a week. They were newly married and their wife was telling them it was not what they signed up for. The business had also shrunk down to half of what it was at its highest point. Their gross margins were good, but the business owner was frustrated. They were constantly on the hamster wheel of working in the business versus on the business. As a result, they were “happy” with where their business was, so unhappy with the life. It was helping them to create. They expressed to me that they didn’t care about growing it because all that represented was more work and less time.
Implementation:
We began by getting a clear definition of what success would look like both in life and in business, in that order. Once we had this foundation laid, we began to evaluate what the strengths of the owner was and the areas where he needed to be operating in the business. After that, I met with his team to help staff to his strengths. In doing so, we created role clarity for each position with measurable outcomes that each employee was expected to deliver. Meanwhile, I continued to meet with the business owner. One of the biggest things we would continue to unpack is fear. It shows up for everyone, masking differently. In this particular case, it was fear of letting go. The more he delegated, however, the more he saw the people around him were capable.
Results:
In one years time, this business Owner’s net profit went up 83% on a 17% increase in sales. His work week was reduced by 25%. He moved to another part of the country and ended up opening a second location where his wife grew up. She is now back with her friends and he is happy to be able to spend more time with her. He is currently looking at opening a third location.

Challenge 2 (non-profit)
I started working with this organizational leader a couple of years before I started my coaching practice. I was volunteering to help him in the areas of strategy and execution. He became my first paying client. He followed the founder of an organization. As a result, he inherited systems, people, and vision that was not his own. As a result, he was leading the organization with a mask on. He was trying to achieve things that he actually didn’t believe in. This resulted in him being extraordinarily frustrated inside of the organization he was the head of. As a result, his leadership was an anxious, focused on pleasing others, and this resulted in the results being stagnant. As a nonprofit, this organization was pulling annually from its reserves to meet its operating budget.
Implementation:
We helped this leader discern a clear set of vision, mission, values as well as short and long-term goals. We also helped him to evangelize this new direction throughout his entire organization. We helped him to build a world class team.We helped him to organize his budget around his priorities.
Results:
His nonprofit organization has now experienced five consecutive years of growth. They no longer draw on their reserves to operate. In fact, they are now replenishing them. Most importantly, though, this leader is now living with boldness and intentionality, personally and professionally.

Challenge 3 (Fractional HR Consultant):
This entrepreneur made the courageous decision to go out and start their own consulting practice. They achieved some immediate success, so much so that the business became incredibly disorganized. Contractors and employees were waiting for responses from the business owner that they were not getting. This was stunting the organization‘s ability to continue to scale despite its increasing sales. In addition, the owner was afraid to charge what their services were worth. This was creating cash flow issues. The business owner was also neglecting their own self-care and health.
Implementation:
Over a breakfast meeting – before they became a client – I reviewed the product offerings with this client. Over that meeting we doubled their prices. Later, they would text me and tell me that their clients didn’t even bat an eye at their increased prices. She jokingly now says that her prices increase every time we meet. We also performed a Working Genius assessment with her and her team to identify the areas where she was really strong and the strengths of her team members. We realigned the organization to improve communication and empowerment at the most basic levels. We helped her to introduce outcomes into employee accountability, as well as in her business as a whole. To assist in her cash flow issues, we also helped her to transition to a Bookkeeper who provides timely and insightful information to inform decision-making with data as opposed to mere feel.
Results:
This business owner hit their five-year revenue goal in two years (less than six months of working with us). she hired two full-time staff to oversee operations and client success, enabling her to focus on more business development with higher ticket clients. She also is no longer working weekends. She recently went on a weeklong vacation with her husband and fully unplugged.
